More questions than answers in killing of man found on Berks' Thun Trail

More questions than answers in killing of man found on trail

CUMRU TWP., Pa. - Police are trying to track down leads in the killing of a man whose body was found on the Thun Trail Sunday morning.

The body of Luis Salas-Ramos was discovered just before 7 a.m. on a stretch of the trail in Cumru Twp., Berks Co.

"We do this part of the trail quite often," said Wayne Snyder, who was with a group of about nine other cyclists biking on the trail Monday afternoon, even after hearing reports the body was found there 24 hours before. "I know most of them knew about it, but it didn't keep us from coming out."

According to police, an autopsy conducted Monday determined Salas-Ramos, 41, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The coroner ruled his death a homicide.

Evidence markers and crime scene tape closed off the trail Sunday near Route 724.

"Very often, women won't come out on the trail themselves because they feel it's dangerous, and just when you have them persuaded the rail is not dangerous, something like this happens," said Peggy Whittaker, a volunteer for the Thun Trail.

Police are still investigating whether the shooting happened on the trail or if the victim's body was dumped there.

Salas-Ramos was from York, Pa., but was currently living in the 400 block of South 4th Street in Reading, police said.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. The crime stoppers group is offering a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
