Massive fire consumes part of Seaside Park boardwalk

Huge flames destroys section of Seaside boardwalk

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. - A massive fire is under control after hours of burning businesses along a Jersey shore boardwalk that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Aerial video from WPVI-TV shows intense flames and thick smoke spewing from Kohr's Ice Cream on the boardwalk in Seaside Park, Ocean County Thursday evening.

The fire was reported at 2:18 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread to neighboring buildings on the boardwalk, said Chief Thomas Boyd, Seaside Heights Police Dept.

It was finally declared to be under control just before 10 p.m.  Fire crews remained on scene to fight hot spots.

Firefighters' efforts were hampered by strong winds, which were fanning the flames.

The Ocean County prosecutor's office said traffic congestion from onlookers was also impeding emergency response vehicles from reaching the area.

Several firefighters and residents were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Boyd said.

Kohr's is located on a boardwalk that was rebuilt following extensive damage from Sandy.

Seaside Park is near where a roller coaster that was pushed into the ocean during Sandy became an enduring image of the storm.
