Poll: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's popularity remains strong

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's popularity remains strong even though a new poll showed those surveyed aren't happy with the way he's handling the economy and taxes.

Friday's Rutgers-Eagleton Poll found 66 percent of registered voters surveyed approve of the job Christie is doing compared to 31 percent who don't, up six points from June.

The survey showed 42 percent approve of Christie's handling of the economy and jobs and 34 percent approve of his performance on taxes.

"It was inevitable that the governor's ratings would drop from their high point during the run-up to an election, but Christie continues to bask in broad support," said David Redlawsk, the poll's director and professor of political science at Rutgers University.

The Democrat running against Christie in November isn't benefiting from the discontent. The poll showed more than half of the voters still don't know or have an impression about Barbara Buono.

"This lack of name recognition greatly hampers Buono's chances," said Redlawsk, "and given the cost of buying media in New Jersey and her relative lack of funding so far, improving her standing will be difficult. Even with improved favorability, it's simply not yet enough to overcome Christie's built-in advantages."

The survey of 814 registered voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
