Cartwright, Gerlach, Fitzpatrick, Dent, Pitts win US House races in Pa.
Republicans will have 13 of state's 18 US House seats in January
The seat once held by longtime U.S. Rep. Tim Holden is staying in Democratic hands after attorney Matt Cartwright defeated Republican Laureen Cummings.
Cartwright defeated Holden in the Democratic primary in April in the 17th Congressional District, which includes all of Schuylkill County and parts of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton counties. Holden was first elected to Congress in 1992 as a conservative, so-called Blue Dog Democrat.
The district had been redrawn to add tens of thousands more Democrats and the newly added cities of Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Easton. Cartwright had name recognition in Scranton after long running ads for his Moosic law firm.
Cummings is a nurse and small business owner.
In the the 6th District, which includes parts of Berks, Chester, Lehigh and Montgomery counties, Republican Jim Gerlach held off another challenge from Democrat Manan Trivedi.
In the 8th District, which includes Bucks County and small parts of Montgomery County and Northeast Philadelphia, Republican Mike Fitzpatrick defeated Democrat Kathy Boockvar.
In the 15th District, which includes parts of Berks County and the Lehigh Valley, Republican Charlie Dent defeated Rick Daugherty for a fifth term in Congress.
In the 16th District, which is made up of parts of Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties, Republican Joe Pitts won re-election over Democrat Aryanna Strader and two other opponents.
The most closely watched U.S. House race in the state was in western Pennsylvania, where Republican Keith Rothfus unseated Democratic incumbent Rep. Mark Critz.
Critz had been fighting to keep his seat since winning the special election in 2010 after his former boss, longtime Democratic Rep. John Murtha, died in office.
Rothfus' win helped Republicans pick up a seat in Pennsylvania, meaning the GOP will have 13 of the state's 18 U.S. House seats in January.
