Ash Wednesday marks beginning of Lent
Ash Wednesday
Many Christians are observing the start of a season of reflection, fasting and prayer.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday.
Some Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads in the sign of a cross.
They include Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Methodists and Presbyterians.
The ashes are considered a sign of repentance.
