No evidence of 'aquatic humanoids', says U.S. government
Announcement shocks ol' time sailors, Disney fans
The National Ocean Service, a sub-section of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has officially announced that there is no evidence to support the existence of mermaids.
The federal agency was forced to make the announcement on their website last week in response to public inquiries following the airing of 'Mermaids: The Body Found,' a TV program that some viewers mistook for a documentary.
The organization notes that while mermaids have been important to sea lore around the world- there is simply no proof they are real.
"No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found," the NOS said in the online statement.
Officials from the NOS told the BBC that the article was written with publicly available information because the service does not "have a mermaid science program."
