Tissue holders may have radioactive material
If you bought a metal tissue holder from Bed Bath and Beyond in the past few months, you may want to take a closer look.
Bed Bath and beyond is recalling metal tissue holders because some have been contaminated with low levels of radioactive material.
Federal regulators say metal tissue holders contaminated with low levels of radioactive material may have been distributed to stores in more than 20 states.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre says the home products company has pulled the tissue holder from its stores.
He says there's no threat to human health but it's better to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation.
McIntyre said the company had received shipments of the tissue holders in July, August and December, but that only the December one — which contained 220 of the boxes — was determined to have contaminated products. He said the company is still trying to determine whether the other shipments had contaminated products.
Authorities said the tissue holders contain manmade cobalt-60, which is used in medical devices and for other industrial applications.
Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. said in a statement Thursday its Dual Ridge Metal boutique tissue holder has been carried in about 200 of its stores since July.
Store officials say customers can return the tissue holders to any store for a full refund.
