Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey wants to make it tougher on criminals who target seniors.

Casey wants to increase criminal and civil penalties for senior fraud cases.

He's proposing a bill that takes several actions including adding a federal civil penalty of up to $50,000.

Casey says American seniors control $18 trillion in assets and that makes them vulnerable.

He says it's time to clamp down on scammers who target seniors.

"They target them in a very particular and deliberate and I would say, diabolical way, so when they do that we've got to smack them hard and hit them really hard with tough penalties," said Sen. Casey.

Casey says fraud cases targeting seniors make up 26 percent of all fraud cases in the U.S. and the population of seniors is expected to more than double over the next 50 years.
