Governor Pawlowski? Poll says he could beat Gov. Corbett
From atop the Queen City to the high man in Harrisburg? A new poll suggests Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski has a good shot at governor if he runs.
Mayor Ed Pawlowski has hinted at a possible run for the governor's job. A new Quinnipiac University poll may bolster his plans.
It shows in a head-to-head matchup, Pawlowski is one of three Democrats who could beat Governor Tom Corbett.
So would Pawlowski trade City Hall for the governor's mansion?
"I think he would work hard and get good people around him," said Allentown resident Betsy Ragan.
"Let's finish this and get it rolling before you look to hit the road," said resident George Whary.
A new Quinnipiac University poll suggests if Pawlowski were to hit the gubernatorial campaign trail, he would beat current Governor Tom Corbett by a 44% to 37% margin.
"I'm flattered. I would be less than forthright if I said I'm not interested, but I'm going to take time to consider this," Pawlowski said.
The poll showed Pawlowski is one of three Democrats leading Corbett. Others are former Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Joe Sestak, who has the widest margin and Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz of Montgomery County.
Sestak's camp says the poll has no bearing whether the former admiral will run or not.
As for Pawlowski: "I've said it many times: I'm currently focused on serving residents of Allentown and continuing the great work we've started."
The Corbett camp says the poll is meaningless but political pundit Chris Borick says the poll could be a prelude to a very crowded 2014 race.
"It says more about the vulnerability of Corbett than Mayor Pawlowski's standing among the electorate," Borick said.
For Pawlowski to have a legitimate shot, Borick says the mayor needs to bolster his name recognition across the state.
"At this point in terms of largest name recognition throughout the state of Democratic contenders would be Joe Sestak," Borick added.
Pawlowski said he's in no hurry to make a formal decision.
