Veterans call for an end to Sequester
Military veterans are calling on Washington to end the sequester.
Some veterans and local residents got together Wednesday at the World War II Monument in West Park in Allentown.
They say, while the federal Department of Veterans Affairs is exempt from mandatory spending cuts, non-VA services that veterans rely on are not.
"There are numerous veterans that are homeless, suffering from mental illness, substance abuse and it's not the VA they go to directly. They go through state and local agencies to get the care they need initially and are then funneled to the VA," said Iraq War veteran Michael Hoffman.
The event was put on by Keystone Progress, a Pennsylvania-based progressive advocacy group, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and the Association of Retired Americans.
