Some volunteer fire companies are breathing a sigh of relief.
The Treasury department announced Friday that the President's Affordable Care Act will not force volunteer departments to provide health-care to firefighters or volunteer emergency medical personnel.
Officials from numerous volunteer fire companies were concerned because they didn't have the money to pay for health care and therefore would be forced to shut down.
According to the AP, volunteer fire departments list their members as "employees" as a way to help attract people to volunteer. The "employee" classification helps some departments offer stipends, retirement benefits and gym memberships.
With the changes volunteers will continue to be personally responsible for providing their own health care.
State law provides worker's compensation to any injuries volunteer firefighters sustain on the job.
