Annual book bonanza sets up shop in new home
Book lovers prepare. Berks County's annual Book Bonanza is happening this weekend, and this year there are some changes.
If you'd like to stock up for some end-of-summer reading, the Book Bonanza is the place to be, and the new location is indoors and air conditioned.
"Don't go to Leesport for the book sale," said Carol Burkhart.
For the first time, the Book Bonanza will be on the third floor of the Red Building of the VF Outlet complex, and organizing it took weeks of work.
"The layout was horrible because you would say, 'I have 40 boxes of this. How much space do I need?'" said Burkhart. "It was hard work getting it organized."
If you want first pick, you can go between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and pay $10. After that, the entrance is free, and there will be plenty left, Burkhart said.
"At 10:00, I can't imagine even 10,000 items will be gone by 10:00," said Burkhart. "I'm still assuming there will be 60,000 items from 10:00 on."
"It's just so much fun to look at this stuff," Burkhart said while walking around the store. "I am a book lover. I already bought $22 worth of stuff."
The Book Bonanza's hours are Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3p.m.
"Sunday is $5 per bag of books," explained Burkhart.
But before the end of the sale, most paperbacks are $1 and hardbacks are $2.
"I'm hoping people will have a good time and buy as many books as they want," said Burkhart.
And the money collected will benefit three groups, the AAUW, the Berks County Public Libraries System headquarters and the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries, and it is used to support the countywide Summer Reading Program for kids and to support scholarships within Berks County.
