Area memorials mark 9/11 anniversary
Local residents marked the 10th anniversary of September 11th with dozens of memorials.
The chorus section of New York's Metropolitan Opera led an interfaith service at Easton's Trinity Church, bringing together Christians, Jews, and Muslims.
Though they call him different names, Yahweh, Allah, and simply God, on Sunday, they prayed with one voice.
"This is an opportunity for people of different traditions to come together to not only see how each other's worship, but to also experience the reality that we can come together and pray," said the Rev. Canon Andrew Gerns, Trinity's rector.
The day was remembered with sirens at Bethlehem fire stations at 1 p.m., the National Moment of Remembrance. Inside sits a poignant reminder every day: a piece of World Trade Center steel inside the watch room.
"We'll always remember it," said Capt. Raymond Buttillo. "That's why we have a piece of their steel in our watch room over here."
At Bethlehem's Payrow Plaza, Mayor John Callahan unveiled a new statue. "Victorii Rebuild" consists of concrete slabs from the slurry wall that surrounded the World Trade Center, protecting it from flooding. Many of the materials were mined in the Lehigh Valley. Although the buildings fell, the walls were never breached.
"It kind of represented to me, maybe two towers, but a rebuilding -- not the original towers, but a rebuilding of the site," said artist Sandra Priest, who created the statue.
Callahan added: "It is sometimes hard for others to understand how the United States, with all of its great size and variety of people and cultures and opinions, can remain as one country and so united."
In Berks County, political leaders led a service at Boyertown Junior High.
"Ten years ago, enemies of our country thought that they could destroy our freedom, that they could destroy liberty, and the American way of life," said state Sen. Judy Schwank (D-Berks County). "How wrong they were."
