READING, Pa. -

The Berks County Jail will soon be housing new inmates.

Up to 50 inmates from the Lancaster County Prison will be moved to the Berks jail in Bern Township because of overcrowding in Lancaster.

The county will be paid $60 per day per inmate for the transfer.

"It's very expensive to run our jail," said Commissioner Kevin Barnhardt, D-Berks Co. "It's a $32 million price tag for the county taxpayers, and when we can find ways to enhance the revenue, we will certainly try to do that."

The inmates from Lancaster County are expected to be moved sometime within the next few weeks.

Berks County has entered into similar inmate agreements before.
