A rash of car break-ins in Berks County has been linked to a gang that has struck up and down the East Coast.

Authorities said they believe the "Felony Lane Gang" broke into cars outside gyms in Wyomissing and in Exeter Twp., Berks Co., two months ago.

The gang of transient thieves, originating in Broward Co., Fla., travel up and down the Interstate 95 corridor, targeting vehicles parked at fitness centers, daycare centers, parks or other places where it is likely the drivers will leave their purse or wallet in the car, police said.

Several men will enter the chosen parking lot and break into several vehicles simultaneously, using a center punch or similar tool and quickly steal the wallet, purse or diaper bag to get your identification, credit cards, bank checks and cash,  before disappearing in less than a minute.

The thieves then switch identifications and bank checks among a group of women, who alter their appearances with wigs, sunglasses, etc., to resemble the victim pictured on the ID/license, and go to the victim’s bank to cash checks, police said.
