WYOMISSING, Pa. -

There were some scary moments for drivers passing by the Wawa on Museum Road and Lancaster Avenue in Wyomissing, Thursday morning.

Flames were shooting up from a car that was parked next to a gas pump.

Pennsylvania State Trooper, David Beohm, was on his way to work when he saw the smoke.

"At that the point when I got there, a fire extinguisher wasn't going to do anything; even a big fire extinguisher wouldn't have done anything," said Beohm.

Witnesses said a wall of smoke traveled to nearby businesses.

"It was burning really hot, a lot of flames, and the roof over it kept some of the smoke in," said Beohm.

Trooper Beohm said he assisted in clearing everyone out of the area until firefighters arrived.

Officials said the Wawa was never in any danger of exploding.

Jeff Smith is a firefighter with the Wyomissing Fire Department. His company responded to the car fire, along with the Spring Township Fire Department.

He debunks a common myth associated with fires and fuel pumps.

"People will see a car on fire at a fuel pump and their first reaction is, 'Oh my God,' and then next thing you know the whole fuel pump is going to explode and the building's going to explode," said Smith. "And that doesn't happen."

Smith explained that Wawa has automatic shut-off valves inside the fuel lines when incidents like these happen.

Twelve hours after the fire, orange cones could still be seen blocking the gas pump.

Investigators say no one suffered serious injuries.

There is no word on what caused the car fire.

Officials warned should you see any vehicle in flames near a gas pump, this at a gas station, stay far away.

"And just call 911, and let the professionals or the fire department put the fire out," said Smith. "Let them do what they're trained to do."
