DOUGLASS TWP., Pa. -

A seven-year-old child suffered a serious head injury when he was hit by a car in Berks County, officials said.

The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of Pine Forge Road, near the Pine Forge Academy, in Douglass Township.

The boy ran into the path of the car as it turned from a driveway onto the street, state police said.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where he was last reported to be in critical condition. A medical helicopter could not fly because of the inclement weather, officials said.

State police said they don't expect to file charges against the driver.
