BERN TWP., Pa. -

Eight people survived a terrifying start to the Memorial Day weekend after their van overturned in a ditch.

It happened at around 8 p.m. Friday on Palisades Drive in Bern Township, Berks County, police said.

Emergency crews were stunned when they arrived.

"Chaos, with the kids running around that were injured," said Sgt. Brian Strand, Bern Township Police. "Upset because of the injuries."

All eight victims -- the driver and seven passengers -- were rushed to the Reading Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

"They crawled out of the van and came up to street level and then EMS crews assisted them from there," said Chief Brian Fisher, Greenfields Fire Company.

There is no word on where the van was coming from, but officials did say that part of Palisades Drive is often used to access Blue Marsh Lake, a popular destination during holiday weekends.

While the area was roped off, police tried to recreate the scene to figure out what happened.

"To try to determine the amount of speed the vehicle may have been traveling prior to impact," said Sgt. Strand.
