It was devastation just days after Christmas; fire ripped through a Berks County home charring everything inside.

Flames shot from a home in the 1700 block of Mt. Laurel Road in Muhlenberg Township Sunday afternoon.

"All I saw was some smoke coming out the side windows here and in the front," said homeowner Jeffrey Reitnauer.

The fast moving flames were initially spotted by a passerby who called emergency crews to the scene while neighbors jumped into action to help.

"This is the door the neighbor came in trying to get the animals out. He said he was hit with a big wall of smoke," said Reitnauer.

There is no word on what started the blaze. But one day later, homeowner Jeffrey Reitnauer walked through the home he once shared with his wife and two young sons.

Thankfully the family was not home at the time of the fire. But the Reitnauers lost everything, including their pets.

"Everything is gone. Their best buddies, the animals. We had two dogs and two cats," said Reitnauer.

Now the family is left without a home just four days after Christmas. But Reitnauer says his wife's grandfather built the home in the late 1940's and they do not want to let it go.

"We want to rebuild. We do not want to move. We do not want to change it. It is our home," said Reitnauer.

The family lost everything in the fire.

If you would like to help, you can donate clothing, gift cards or toys for their five- or eight-year-old sons. Donations are being accepted at 1716 Mount Laurel Road in Muhlenberg Township.
