A man was shot dead and two other people were wounded, one critically, after a gunman opened fire outside a bar Sunday morning, police said.
The man who died was Ramon Rosario-Evangelista. His friends called him "El Rey Supremo" -- the supreme king.
To former Reading city Councilman Angel Figuero, Rosario-Evangelista, 21, was a promising student at his I-Lead Charter School.
"He was very determined to go back to school, get his GED, go to college," Figueroa said.
Rosario-Evangelista was shot and killed outside the A-Town Cafe at N. 10th and Elm streets in Reading. Also shot in the chest was another victim, who's listed in critical condition.
"He's critical; it doesn't look good," said his cousin, Judy Gonzalez. "Fifty-fifty chance, so we don't know yet. We're hoping everything comes out okay, but we don't know yet."
Police said they have not identified a suspect, but do have some leads.
"We have some video surveillance that we've been viewing and you can tell it was a crowded night," said Sgt. John Solecki.
Solecki said a fight broke out on the corner after the bar closed. That led to a man shooting Rosario-Evangelista. and the other victim. It's not clear how it started.
"That's what we're trying to determine, if this was an ongoing dispute or if it was one of those disputes that just started inside the bar, where maybe one guy bumped into another guy or gave him -- gave his girlfriend a look," Solecki said.
Longtime neighbor Juan Vaquer said he heard eight shots. He said the A-Town Cafe is the site of frequent fights.
The victim who survived, but is now clinging to life, was at the bar with his girlfriend, police said. They said she was also shot in the leg, but is expected to recover.
Solecki said detectives have interviewed her, but she was not able to give them a name of the suspect.
According to Solecki, there were many witnessses outside the bar, but most left the scene before police could talk to them.
Officials said Rosario-Evangelist's death has been ruled a homicide, and he died of a gunshot wound to the head.
They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to call Reading police or Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
Callers to Crime Alert can receive a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the homicide.
