Humane society offers food, vaccines
The Humane Society of Berks County (HSBC) is offering vaccines at reduced fees and free pet food on Saturday.
Dry dog and cat food will be given to pet owners from 9 a.m. until noon, or until supplies run out.
The food was originally donated to the HSBC's Ani-Meals on Wheels program, which provides food and veterinary care free of charge to disabled, elderly or disadvantaged pet owners in Berks and Montgomery counties.
"We have several thousand pounds of food donated each year, and if we can't use all of it for Ani-Meals on Wheels, we don't want it to go to waste," said Karel Minor, HSBC Executive Director.
Also on Saturday, the HSBC's veterinary hospital will hold a clinic, offering discounted vaccines and identification microchips without a regular appointment fee.
The clinic will go from 9 a.m. to noon. Vaccines will be $21 and microchips $15.
To receive the services, dog owners must show a valid 2012 Berks County dog license and current rabies vaccination--both are required by law and both can be obtained at the HSBC on the day of the clinic.
Both the vet clinic and the pet food giveaway will held at the HSBC Lindy Scholar Center at 1801 N. 11th St. in Reading.
The Humane Society of Berks County serves all of southeastern Pennsylvania and surrounding regions. In addition to the Reading facility, the Humane Society also has animal welfare centers at 1201 Ben Franklin Hwy E. in Douglassville and 503 S. Center Rd. (Rt. 82) in Birdsboro.
