NEW YORK -

A man on the run from the law for the last seven weeks is now back behind bars.

Tony Smith was picked up by police for suspicious activitity in Manhattan on Saturday. They later learned he was an escapee from Berks County.

Smith, 32, was serving time at the Berks County Jail when state police said he ran off from a supervised work detail at the Charles Evans Cemetery on North 5th Street in Reading on Dec. 30.

At the time, police said Smith was wearing a jacket with "BCJ" on the back, a bright orange/yellow hat, and a colostomy bag, but they believed he had outside help in his escape.

Authorities in New York charged Smith with resisting arrest and drug possession. He's now awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania on escape charges.
