Kutztown Mayor Sandra Green says some of the college drinking in the borough is out of control.

In fact, Tuesday night, borough council decided to send a letter to the Liquor Control Board, asking that the Wine and Spirits store on Constitution Boulevard, cut back its hours and close at 7 o'clock nightly.

"At least we're moving forward and doing something and helping this community," said Mayor Sandra Green.

But the mayor's efforts are finding strong opposition.

"I think it should be open longer, because I think they close so early, and you don't have nothing open around here," said Manuela Warch.

"I think college students are college students, and if they can't get it here, they'll get it somewhere else," said Donna Day.

The mayor says the problem is aggravated when large groups of intoxicated students hit Main street, headed to the next bar, and in the process have been known to pass out in the street.

But some say getting control of college drinking could be better addressed with education.

"Binge drinking will reduce itself if you have more mentors and leaders go and talk to the students about it. You can continue decreasing hours, adding days away, it's not going to do it. The thing is communication, and that's what the students need most," said Hayden Craddolph.

The mayor says it is only a small portion of the student body that is participating in excessive drinking, and that the majority of the students are problem-free.

The mayor also states that she just wants to make sure no one ends up losing a life over excessive drinking.

"I love this college town," said Mayor Green. "I would not want to be anywhere else. I just am worried about the safety of the students and residents."

The liquor control board says when it receives the borough's letter, it will review it.
