EXETER TWP., Pa. -

A motorcyclist was killed in an accident that closed a stretch of the West Shore Bypass for more than three hours Tuesday, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the bypass (Route 422), near the merge with Perkiomen Avenue, in Exeter Twp., Berks Co.

According to witnesses, two motorcycles were driving erratically by swerving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed when one of them slammed into the back of a box truck, said Chief Christopher Neidert, Exeter Twp. Police Dept.

The operator of the crashed motorcycle, identified as Dale A. Hackman, 29, of Wyomissing, was rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, but he died a short time later, Neidert said.

Neither the driver of the truck nor the operator of the other motorcycle was injured in the accident, police said.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Ofc. Darrin Gartner at 610-779-1490.

West Shore Bypass traffic

Eastbound traffic was diverted off the bypass at Mount Penn to East Neversink Road and onto Perkiomen Avenue.
