Farming officials are joining the efforts save grassland raptors in Berks County.

The birds have been on the decline in the area, said officials, who want to reverse the trend by encouraging farmers to put up nest boxes, protect grassland areas and report sightings of the birds.

The birds, officials said, offer natural pest control because they eat mice, insects and voles.

The program is a partnership with the Pennsylvania Game Commission and Hawk Mountain.
