Boyertown Area School District considers options for old high school
Proposal to tear down buildings met with protest on Facebook
The Boyertown Area School District is looking at new ways to better fit the needs of its students, but one option to demolish the old high school isn't sitting well with the community.
Over the last few month, school board members have debated the fate of a piece of the district's history. The original high school buildings date back to 1920 and 1938.
District officials said they are looking at ways to best utilize the buildings' 76,000 square feet of space.
It would cost the district close to $12 million to renovate the buildings, said Robert Scoboria, acting superintendent.
"One is to disconnect the entire building and not use for instructional use, but determine the future usage. Another option is to remove the 1938 section and then determine the use of the 1920 section. And yes, there's a third option -- to remove the entire building and use that land for another use," said Scoboria.
Charles Amuso, a former Boyertown superintendent, has been hired by the school board as a consultant for this project. He said removing the buildings allows for the district to build a brand new, state-of-the-art facility.
"It's best to have them in a space that's designed for education today," said Amuso.
News of the potential changes spread fast among alumni. A Facebook page created to sound off against removing the buildings quickly racked up more than 400 likes by Tuesday evening.
"A lot of good memories in that school," said James Mull, class of 1975, adding that he wants to preserve the historical value of the buildings. "Tearing that down would be like taking a face off of something."
A meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Boyertown Education Center for those that want to voice their concerns.
Another meeting is scheduled for March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Junior High West school.
