Daniel Boone board decides to keep sports, kindergarten
The Daniel Boone Area school board approved a resolution Wednesday night to put kindergarten and extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, back in the budget for next year. Residents of the district had turned out in force earlier this week to protest proposed cuts.
District superintendent Gary Otto said the board is proposing using a fund balance and a tax increase to pay for these measures. They are still $2.2 million short in next year's budget. That number was was originally at around $5 million when the board approved their preliminary budget.
Otto blames state cuts in funding and rising pension costs on the schools budget shortfalls.
He said cyber and charter schools also cost the district at least one million dollars a year.
