Family and friends paid tribute to the Berks County sheriff's deputy who died in the line of duty one year ago Friday.
They gathered for a memorial event at the Barbecue Pit restaurant in Lower Heidelberg Township to honor Kyle Pagerly.
A year ago Pagerly was shot and killed during a gunbattle in Albany Township.
Police say the man who shot Pagerly, Matthew Connor, also was killed.
Pagerly's parents visited the site of their son's death earlier in the day.
His father, David, says the event has a special meaning.
"What we want to do tonight is obviously remember Kyle and remember on the anniversary of his death. At the same time we want to remember all those sacrifice every day for us. We can't thank them enough. I mean from the police officers, first responders, military, everybody. This is what tonight is all about," he said.
Earlier Friday Governor Corbett signed a bill that names part of Route 422 after Pagerly.
Route 422 from the intersection with Route 724 in Sinking Spring to the west end of Robesonia is now known as the "Kyle D. Pagerly Memorial Highway."
