SPRING TWP., Pa. -

At Penn State Berks, the debate over gay marriage had students' attention.

The debate featured Zach Wahls-- a University of Iowa student and son of two lesbian mothers.

Wahls gained fame after video of his testimony before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee went viral.

The debate also featured John H. Rogers, who is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Rogers is against gay marriage but for civil unions.

"I believe the swiftest and only way at this point for same sex families to achieve equality is not through the institution of marriage, but through the creation of a brand new institution," Rogers said.

"Nothing says commitment or trust like marriage. Nothing says family or love like marriage,"  Wahls said.

The presentation was a part of the Penn State Berks Arts and Lecture series.
