Giant Food Stores is almost ready to open its newest store in Berks County.

The Carlisle-based chain announced Wednesday that its 50,000 square-foot store in Maxatawny Township, just outside Kutztown, will open to customers at 8 a.m. on Feb. 27.

"Our entire team is excited to introduce the Kutztown community to Giant’s unique combination of quality, selection and savings," said Steve Bowlby, manager of the new store and a 12-year Giant employee who most recently served as store manager of the Giant in Quakertown, Bucks Co.

The store, officials said, features Giant's latest prototype and new décor package, along with an on-site gas station. The store is also pursuing LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for its energy-saving features, which include LED lighting and concrete floors that reduce the need for cleaning solutions, officials said.

"We can’t wait to show off our new state-of-the-art store that features modern amenities for a more convenient shopping experience," Bowlby said.

The new store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employ 150 full- and part-time employees.

It's the seventh Giant to open in Berks County since 1985. It will be at 15100 Kutztown Road.
