READING, Pa. -

The owner of a business that transports people with mental disabilities has been arrested on charges he repeatedly raped one of his clients over a number of years, officials announced Friday.

Joseph Lombardo was taken into custody Friday morning at his home in the 800 block of Joan Terrace in Reading.

Berks County detectives said they began their investigation of Lombardo in September after the alleged victim, a 48-year-old woman, told police he had inappropriate contact with her, beginning in 2009 and continuing through 2011.

During the two-year span, Lombardo transported the woman to Special Olympics events that she participated in, detectives said.

On numerous occasions, detectives said Lombardo, 59, sexually abused the woman in his vehicle and at his home. A licensed psychologist, who assisted authorities with the investigation, concluded that the woman was unable to provide consent to sexual activity, detectives said.

Lombardo owns and operates "Life Coach Companion," a transportation business for mentally disabled individuals, detectives said.

Lombardo was charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault and indecent exposure.
