A Reading father has pleaded guilty to 3rd degree murder for the death of his daughter.
Hector Garcia was sentenced Monday to 20 to 40 years in prison.
Garcia assaulted his 26-month-old daughter, Nely Cintron, in 2010, leaving the little girl blind, unable to walk and completely care-dependent until she passed away Thursday, authorities said.
"The investigators, combined with the medical evidence, and I think it was too much then that he could overcome that," said First Assistant District Attorney Theresa Johnson.
Officials said Garcia initially gave false statements, but in the end he pleaded guilty to the charges.
"The injuries were so significant that the doctors that we spoke with, and reviewed, compared these injuries to that of a motor vehicle accident, so I think this is something that will always be at the back of my mind having Nely as a victim in this case," said Meg McCallum, assistant district attorney.
