Maxatawny Township in Berks County is moving forward with plans to form its own police department.
The township supervisors unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday night to form a department.
The move comes after a decision to disband the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department, which currently covers Maxatawny Township and Lyons and Topton boroughs in Berks County and Upper Macungie Township in Lehigh County.
Upper Macungie officials are also in the process of forming a township police department.
The next move for Maxatawny will be to hire a chief for its new police department, which will have no more than seven members, including the chief, officials said.
Maxatawny Township is also in talks with Lyons and Topton to provide police coverage for the two boroughs, officials said.
Lyons is currently reviewing a proposal to contract service from Maxatawny, according to the borough's solicitor, who said negotiations with the township are expected to take place in the coming months before a coverage plan is made official.
A meeting between Maxatawny and Topton officials is scheduled for Thursday night, officials said.
