People in need treated to Christmas dinner, fellowship
People in need didn't have to go without a hot meal or a place to gather with friends this Christmas Day.
St. John's Lutheran Church in Boyertown served a hot lunch to anyone in the community who had nowhere else to go.
The pastor said he expected the church to serve or deliver meals to about 180 people.
The church has been serving lunch on Christmas Day for a number of years, the pastor said.
The Berks County Area Agency on Aging also sponsored its 43rd annual Christmas Day dinner at Berks Encore on North 9th Street in Reading on Tuesday.
The goal is to make sure seniors aren't alone on the holiday, and organizers said the event is about more than just getting a hot meal.
"Perhaps meeting a new friend, perhaps words of encouragement, perhaps just feeling good about the day itself," said Dianne Dachowski.
About 160 people came out for the event, and volunteers delivered meals to about 140 others who are home-bound, Dachowski said.
