WEST READING, Pa. -

A pedestrian died Monday after being struck by a car in Berks County, police said.

The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. Monday in the area of South Fifth Avenue and Pine Street, next to the Reading Hospital property, in West Reading.

The male victim, identified by the coroner as Marlin Long, was crossing Fifth Avenue when he was hit, said police, adding that the impact tossed him about 30 feet.

Long, 68, of West Reading, was rushed to the hospital's trauma center, where he died less than an hour later of head and chest injuries, the coroner said.

The striking car, a blue Honda Civic, had a small dent in the hood and a shattered windshield.

The intersection remained closed for a few hours while police and a county team of forensic investigators reconstructed the accident.

The preliminary investigation has revealed no indication that the driver was speeding when her car hit the victim, police said.
