Police warn about driveway paving scam in Muhlenberg Twp., surrounding areas
"Pennsylvania Paving Co." believed to be fraudulent business, police say
Police are sounding the alarm about an alleged scam that's leaving homeowners with incomplete driveways.
Since May, Muhlenberg Township police said they have received several reports from residents in the south Temple area who said they fell victim to a driveway paving scam.
"Our detectives are currently working on trying to identify these people," said Ofc. Joel Marino.
Workers from a company called "Pennsylvania Paving Company" have gone to several homes soliciting work, said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.
"If someone is so desperate for work coming out to your door to solicit work, I think that should send up a red flag," said Adams.
"They came to your house, knocked on your door, hit you high pressure, high pressure sales technique, then they move on," said Marino. "They'll get your money and they'll go."
The workers -- white men ranging in age from teens to 50s -- offer to re-do driveways with asphalt left over from other jobs, said police, adding that they have asked for at least $5,000.
One homeowner, Marino said, made out a check payable to Corey Nelson. Others paid the amount when the work was partially complete.
When the workers ran out of materials, Marino said, they never returned to finish the job. The scam appears to be a family affair, police said.
"We're talking about a crime family, and it truly is a family. They all work together for this scam," said Marino.
69 News searched on LinkedIn for Corey Nelson and found the company's name and address, located in Moosic, Pa., near Scranton. A Google search also showed a listing for the Pennsylvania Paving Company, but no one was available at the number provided.
Several online posts reveled customer complaints about the company.
Police are asking residents with any additional information, or if they too have been involved in a similar scam, to contact Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
