A new program is aiming to better serve the needs of pregnant women in the Reading area.

The Centering Pregnancy Program is being launched thanks to a $726,000 grant the St. Joseph Medical Foundation is sharing with 20 community organizations.

During an information session Thursday at Langan Allied Health Academy, organizers said the goal of the program is to promote health assessment, education and support within a group setting.

"They have statistics that prove centering pregnancy reduces pre-term labor and pre-term birth because you're more educated to know what the signs and symptoms are so that you can go to the hospital to help stop it, and so your outcome is more healthier babies and healthier moms," said Sylvia Ney.

St. Joseph is in the process of implementing the program at its downtown Reading campus.
