BERN TWP., Pa. -

A Berks County Jail inmate treated himself to a brief taste of freedom Thursday.

The inmate, identified as Ramon Valasquez, walked away from the jail in Bern Township around 10:35 a.m., police said.

State police were about to put their helicopter in the air when a Reading police officer, who was helping with the search, found Valasquez on a trail along the Tulpehocken Creek, near Montgomery Street, in the far northwestern section of the city about 45 minutes after his escape, police said.

Jail officials responded to the scene and positively identified Valasquez, police said.

Valasquez, 45, was returned to the jail. He will be charged with escape, police said.

Prison officials have not said how Valasquez managed to break free from the jail or why he is incarcerated in the first place.

State police were involved in the search, along with officers from the city,  Wyomissing, Bern and Muhlenberg townships, Penn State and the county parks department and deputies with the Berks County Sheriff's Department.
