Reading officials announce new housing inspection fees
The city of Reading has a new plan to bring properties up to par.
City leaders took the wraps off new rental inspection fees Tuesday.
For a single family rental unit the initial three-year inspection will drop from $505 to $140.
For a two-unit rental property it will go from $705 to $165.
The idea is to give property owners incentive to get up to code as quickly as possible.
As for penalties, those will increase and keep going up for landlords who don't comply.
"If we have to go and inspect your property for the third time due to non-compliance, we will be imposing another inspection fee similar to the one that we had initially," said Lenin Agudo, the director of Community Development.
The new fees take effect January 1st.
