READING, Pa. -

The Berks County chapter of the Red Cross is helping veterans in need of a lift.

Several agencies donated to the Red Cross so the agency could buy a new 15-passenger Chevy van. It will be one of two vans used to pick up veterans at home and take them to appointments.

The program helps nearly 500 veterans in Berks County each year.

"We transport them to the VA facility in Lebanon. It's a daily program," said Janet Curtis, executive director. "On weekdays, we transport all of our drivers who are veterans themselves. We have about over a thousand trips a year, so it's an amazing program."

Red Cross officials said they've been in need of a new van since late 2011.
