One traditional sound of the holiday season can now be heard loud and clear around the region.
The Salvation Army launched its annual Red Kettle campaign, a tradition in the U.S. since 1891, with a kickoff event at 5th and Penn streets in downtown Reading on Friday.
The organization's brass ensemble performed a medley of Christmas songs as passersby paused to listen and drop a donation in the kettle.
Bell ringers will be dispatched with the kettles to stores and shopping malls around Berks County throughout the holiday season as the Salvation Army seeks cash donations to help make Christmas brighter for the community's less fortunate residents.
The Salvation Army is also collecting donations through its online Red Kettle campaign.
