Stolen ambulance recovered in Reading
Reading police are on the case after an ambulance went missing from the scene of a call. Emergency responders in Reading treated a patient and when they went outside their ambulance was nowhere in sight.
The ambulance was found not far from where it was reported stolen in the city.
Near the intersection of South 10th and South streets, people saw an ambulance from the Western Berks Ambulance.
"When I came out of the cemetery this ambulance right across the street had all it's lights going the sirens going and I just assumed my neighbor something had happened to her," said Stefanie Hodowanec.
Hodowanec said she quickly saw it wasn't a regular ambulance call.
"Two police cars one came up South Street the other one came down blocked off the top street and got out of their cars with guns at that ambulance," said Hodowanec, "Then I just quickly brought my dogs in the house."
Reading police said the ambulance was stolen when two emergency medical service workers were treating a patient at 8th and Franklin.
"I saw that they were going around the ambulance with their flashlights," said Hodowanec, "They said, 'secure.' And another police officer came up and he said, 'how is everything?' And he said, 'Secure.' They all went down the street."
Police said witnesses told them the man who stole the ambulance was seen running out of it and into a home on the 600 block of South 10th Street.
"And that's where they were all running down there to a home down there," said Hodowanec, "And all of a sudden another police officer came and another ambulance came."
Police said when they went into the home, a man complained of an asthma attack and was taken to the hospital.
"Very odd, very odd," said Hodowanec.
An ambulance supervisor at the scene said in his 15 years with the ambulance company he has never had an ambulance stolen.
"I don't know what's going on anymore. This used to be a nice town. Not anymore," said Hodowanec.
Police said the patient who was being helped at 8th and Franklin did get to the Reading Hospital. Police said they are still investigating whether the man with the asthma attack is the person who stole the ambulance.
