Stretch of 422, memorial dedicated to fallen Berks sheriff's deputy
Savannah Pagerly, now almost 8-months-old, never met her father, fallen Berks County sheriff's Deputy Kyle Pagerly, but with the help of two new memorials, people around Berks County will make sure she'll never forget him.
During a ceremony on Route 422 in Sinking Spring on Monday, a speaker spoke about Kyle Pagerly as "a brave young man who gave his life in the service of his community."
Pagerly was killed on June 29, 2011, while trying to serve a warrant with his canine partner, Jynx. At the time, his wife Alecia was pregnant with the couple's first child.
Now, a stretch of 422 from Sinking Spring to Robesonia bears his name: The Kyle D. Pagerly Memorial Highway.
"I want everyone to let her know what a good heart he had," said Alecia Pagerly. "It's one thing for me to tell her, to see all of this, a highway named after him and memorials, to come from a whole community, I think it just speaks volumes."
People driving by can remember Pagerly, but if they want to sit and reflect about his service, they can go to the Western Berks Regional Police Department in Wernersville.
"I was with Deputy Pagerly the night he was killed," said Lt. Adam Kosheba, Pa. State Police, who credits Pagerly and Jynx with saving his life.
"Even though it's a dangerous job, Kyle would undoubtedly inspire many," said Kosheba. "I'm sure he will in the future, as will his young daughter Savannah."
With tears streaming down his cheek, Chief Scott Wagner, of the Western Berks Regional Police Department, where Pagerly worked a part-time officer, praised Alecia Pagerly for doing what Kyle would want and for being so strong.
"Compared to him, no, I don't feel strong," said Alecia Pagerly.
But there's someone who knows only her mother's strength.
"I try to be as strong as I can for her," said Alecia. "I mean, I have to be. I don't have a choice."
Seeing Savannah was a bright spot on this solemn day. Alecia said her baby girl's first word was "Jynx."
