READING, Pa. -

The American Red Cross is hoping you'll add a few extra items to your shopping cart when you visit the grocery store over the next week or so.

The Berks County chapter is seeking donations of food it will use to assemble holiday gift baskets for veterans who ride the Red Cross van to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lebanon.

Items needed for the baskets include boxes or bags of instant potatoes, stuffing and rice; cans or packs of gravy or gravy mixes; cans of corn, string beans, lima beans, carrots, peas, cranberry sauce, apple sauce and fruit cocktail; boxes of Jello and pudding; peanut butter; crackers; cookies; and candy.

Donations can be dropped off at the Berks County chapter's headquarters, 701 Centre Ave., Reading, during the week of Dec. 2, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Volunteers will then sort, pack and deliver the baskets to the veterans.

Anyone with questions about the food basket program can call the Red Cross at 610-375-4383.
