Angel Espada beats uncle, Luis Espada, with broom, threatens to kill him, police say
A Reading man is facing a hearing next week on charges he repeatedly beat his uncle with a broom while threatening to kill him, police said.
The alleged assault happened around 9:30 p.m. on April 20 at a home in the 900 block of Oley Street in the city.
Luis Espada told police that his nephew, Angel Espada, became angry when Luis told him to leave the home. An argument that then began inside the home moved outside, at which time Angel Espada grabbed a broom and began beating his uncle with it, according to court documents made available Tuesday.
Luis Espada told police he was struck six or seven times on his head, left arm and back, which resulted in bruises being visible to the investigating officers, said police, adding that Angel Espada also threatened to kill his uncle.
Luis Espada then grabbed a broken sword and swung it around him in an effort to defend himself and get back inside the home, police said.
Once Luis Espada was inside his locked home, Angel Espada threw a brick through a window, repeatedly kicked the door and continued threats to kill his uncle before he left the home, according to court documents.
Angel Espada, 39, was subsequently arrested and charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, harassment and criminal mischief. He was committed to the Berks County Jail on $10,000 bail and ordered to have no contact with his uncle.
