A former Berks County high school sports star has been hospitalized after his car hit with a cow in Vermont.

Anthony Care was traveling north on Route 22A in Bridport when his vehicle collided with cow, state police said.

The Tulpehocken High School graduate was flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, where he underwent surgery, officials said.

Hospital officials say Care is currently in serious but stable condition

Cindy Emore has been Anthony's neighbor since he was a child and was one of the first to find out about the accident.

"He had some swelling, bleeding on the brain, I do believe," Emore said.

Loved ones said the operation was a success, and now they are pulling for Anthony's speedy recovery.

"We were all together Saturday night, having a great time, celebrating everything, and to get that phone call this morning at 6:00 was just devastating," Emore said.

Care, 21, graduated from Tulpehocken in 2010 and was a soccer and track star, breaking several records, neighbors said.

"He's a very, very strong kid," Emore said. "So, I think with the support of the community and family, and prayers, we're putting prayers out everywhere, huge prayer chain."
