Berks County DA: 27,500 doses of heroin seized during drug bust
More than a quarter million dollars worth of heroin is off the streets of Berks County. It is part of a drug trafficking investigation and authorities say it is not over.
An undercover sting in the 1900 block of North 5th Street Highway led to the arrests of Eliseo Ramos, 34, and Pedro Santos, 46.
"These are mid to high level heroin traffickers and sweeping them off the streets is necessary for the safety of our community," said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.
Detectives tell us Santos is a popular musician in the Dominican culture and goes by the name Peggy Santos.
Detectives say they initially busted the men for possessing 100 grams of heroin. But after executing a search warrant on Santos's home on West Oley Street, police say they found more heroin as well as cocaine, oxycodone, numerous drug packaging materials and paraphernalia, a 9 mm handgun and money.
"Clearly this drug operation was a substantial drug operation," said Adams.
Neighbors who live near Santos tell us they are upset to hear about the drugs on their block.
"I think it is unsafe because there are children everywhere. Especially that they are dealing," said neighbor Brunitza Rivera.
Adams says heroin is becoming the main drug of choice not only in the city of Reading, but in the county and across the state.
"It clearly has become the number one problem that we are facing. And along with that, it is probably the most addictive drug that our youth and our adults get involved with," said Adams.
Adams says this investigation is not over. Detectives want to find out who the supplier is and how they are distributing the drugs. So they expect more arrests in the future.
Both men are in the Berks County Jail on $200,000 cash bail each.
