Berks DA announces homicide charges in 2 cold case investigations
Norman Vega charged in 2004 shooting deaths of Miguel Colon, Jason Stief
Authorities have made an arrest in a pair of cold-case killings in Berks County.
Norman Vega, Jr., 30, from Bellefonte, Centre County, has been charged in the 2004 shooting deaths of Miguel Colon and Jason Stief, Berks County District Attorney John Adams announced Thursday.
Colon, 38, was shot in the back and killed as he tried to get away from three men who stormed into his home in the 1000 block of Perry Street in Reading on Oct. 3, 2004.
Stief, 20, was visiting with Colon at the time of the home invasion. He, after talking with police, was gunned down on October 14, 2004, while waiting for an order in the McDonald's drive-thru lane at North Ninth and Spring streets.
According to investigators, while Vega was behind bars for an unrelated crime, he allegedly confessed to his role in the crimes, including revealing that he threw the murder weapon in a river.
"During the course of the investigation, the person who was incarcerated with Norman Vega in 2005, advised detectives that Vega admitted to him that he was the shooter in the McDonald's murder," said district attorney John Adams.
Authorities also say that Vega explained to a cell mate why he killed Stief.
"Vega told the person that he was afraid of being identified by Stief in the home invasion," said Adams. "He admitted that he pointed a gun at Stieff and shot him multiple times in the head."
Jason Stief's mother says she has waited almost nine years for justice, and she wants the criminals to pay for what they did to her son.
"It's not over. This is the start of the fight. And, yes, I know it's going to be hard, but I intend to be at every and anything available, any court hearings, any trial dates, anything, I will be there," said Tina Stief.
Vega was charged with first, second and third degree murder; robbery; burglary; criminal conspiracy and related offenses.
Police said the case remains open as more people are sought.
