Car crashes into church

A blown tire led to some tense moments in northwest Reading on Tuesday.

The tire blew out on a car traveling south through the 400 block of Schuylkill Avenue shortly before noon, causing the car to veer out of control, go up on a sidewalk and crash into a church, witnesses said.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene for the report of the driver possibly being trapped inside the wrecked car. The driver was already out of the car by the time crews arrived, but he was transported to a hospital for what officials on the scene described as non-life-threatening injuries.

A city building inspector was summoned to the scene to check for any structural damage to the church.
