READING, Pa. -

A Berks County man has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in a knife attack on his sleeping parents.

Judge Stephen Lieberman subsequently ordered Robert Hausch to remain in the Berks County Jail until space becomes available for him in the Wernersville State Hospital, where he will then be committed for one year of treatment, officials said.

Hausch, 21, was arrested Dec. 30 after investigators said he stabbed his mother and father in the neck with a seven-inch fixed-blade knife as they slept inside their home on Dover Court in Caernarvon Township.

The attack, police said, happened a few hours after Hausch argued with his mother over five failing grades he received in college earlier that week.
